Nurse’s Notes

1530: “Patient not in assigned area, gown on bed, patient not found in hallway, waiting room, or smoking area. Doctor advised of situation, security and triage staff advised to watch for patient. Attempts by ER staff to call patient at home continue.”

1605: “Patient called 911 from the main lobby of the ER, and made a bomb threat for this hospital after going to the hospital lunchroom and helping herself to food without paying. Food services staff called Security, patient escorted out of the cafeteria. Patient returned to the ER waiting room and made the phone call from an in-house phone. Security escorted patient back to bed in ER. Patient placed near nurse’s desk, clothing and belongings removed, sitter at bedside, Doctor at bedside to re-evaluate, Psych evaluation ordered.” Sometimes people just are not happy with the service no matter what you do.

1215: “Patient arrives via EMS with complaint of medication overdose and syncope (fainting). Paramedics report that patient was up for two nights drinking, no sleep, no food, followed by ingestion of Ecstasy and other unknown recreational drugs. Patient drowsy but knows name, date, and place. Vital signs stable, monitor on, IV established, MD at bedside.”

Further examination of the belongings, and questioning the patient, who appeared to be 16, revealed an ID for an Asian woman (the girl looked Latino) named Kenya*, age 33, another ID for Destiny,* and the girl admitted that her professional name was DeeLightFul.*

Her clothing included boots with 6” clear spiked heels, a mini-skirt, sequin-studded bra, G-string, see-through black halter top, and several additional pairs of panties that one surely wouldn’t find at Wal-Mart. Dee* (DeeLightFul was a little clumsy, and Dee seemed more fitting for a teenager) finally admitted to being an ‘exotic dancer’ with no permanent address. Not what any mom might imagine for her teenage daughter.

We all shook our heads and then privately called our children, especially our daughters, to make sure they had everything they needed. I called mine and told her to fill her gas tank and get some groceries on my credit card. I told her to buy anything else she might need, understanding that she was on a limited budget, and I did not want to imagine her being hungry, cold, or in need. My daughter would pick up more shifts at the hospital if she needed money, of course, as she was responsible and independent. As parents, sometimes we help a little when our children have grown and gone, even if only to make ourselves feel better.

2230: “Pt arrives at ED #4 with a vague complaint of pain to abdomen, will not allow RN to assess, and says he will only speak with doctor. Girlfriend at bedside with patient, resident notified of situation.”

2245: “ER Resident to bedside to examine patient, informs RN caring for patient that patient and his girlfriend were ‘playing,’ patient got a vibrator stuck in his rectum; awaiting x-ray, patient in no distress.”

2315: “Resident to bedside to attempt to remove foreign object from rectum; unsuccessful.
